Stefan Koppelkamm
The Victorians thought that industrialisation and scientific discovery would civilise the world, including the natural world. This is explored by Koppelkamm in his series “Glasshouses and Wintergardens of the Nineteenth Century”. Nature was conquered - exotic species could be taken from far off places and grown anywhere; and the natural world was tamed - displayed in a controlled, glass-walled setting.
