Wilfried Bauer

Tragedy, tortured souls, and art are often combined and never more so than in Willy Bauer who destroyed most of his work in a fire. His skill as a photographer had been recognised in an invitation to join Magnum; an invitation turned down. Bauer found solace in photographing trees. He was said to know all of the oldest trees in Germany and all their stories. He preferred to photograph them at dawn.
